Rebuilding Lives, Renewing Hope: 30 Years of Refugee Trauma Recovery in Australia

This booklet celebrates 30 years of the Program of Assistance for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (PASTT), recognising the resilience, strength, and contributions of refugees, asylum seekers, and humanitarian entrants across Australia.

The anniversary was also celebrated at Parliament House in Canberra in November 2025, under the theme “A Promise of Care – 30 Years of Refugee Trauma Recovery in Australia.” Government representatives, community leaders, and sector partners came together to recognise the work of PASTT agencies and reaffirm a shared commitment to care, inclusion, and human dignity.

Here in Tasmania, our Phoenix Centre is proud to be the Tasmanian provider of the PASTT program – walking alongside survivors as they rebuild their lives, restore connection, and find their place in community.

As the publication reflects: while torture seeks to silence, isolate and erase identity, recovery restores voice, connection and purpose. That is the work. And after 30 years, it is far from finished.
